How is Diabetes Treated? | Dr Daniel Kim | Medical Offices of Manhattan

Dr. Daniel Kim discusses what diabetes is, what can cause diabetes including pre-existing risk factors, and how it can be treated at Medical Offices of Manhattan.

Transcription:
1 in 10 Americans are diabetic. Diabetes screening can come in a variety of different blood tests. One being a fast and glucose test, a random glucose test or a hemoglobin A1C. It should be routinely checked for with your annual physicals, but some people may at increased risk, such as people over the age of 45 if you have a first degree relative who has been diagnosed with diabetes, or if you are Asian, African American, Hispanic, or Latino.

So we can also check for diabetes, if you’re having any symptoms such as frequent urination, fatigue, increased thirst or blurred vision. There’s not much preparation involved with a blood test. If we’re checking for a fasting glucose level, you should be fasting for at least eight hours. But a routine hemoglobin A1C doesn’t have to be fasting so it can be drawn at any time during the day.

So preventative care is very important to us here at Medical Offices of Manhattan and diabetic screening is part of that prevention. It’s a simple blood test that can help us diagnose prediabetes and diabetes and help us get ahead of the curve.
