What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a healing practice that has been used for thousands of years. It involves inserting very thin needles into specific points on the body to help balance your energy and improve your health.

During an acupuncture session, acupuncturist Jeffrey Nudelman, M.S., L.Ac., will carefully place needles at various points on your body. These points are chosen based on your specific symptoms and health conditions. The needles are very fine, and most people feel little to no discomfort.

How to Prepare for Acupuncture

Preparing for your acupuncture session is simple. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your treatment:

  • Eat a Light Meal: Have a light meal or snack about 1-2 hours before your session. Avoid going in on an empty stomach or being overly full.
  • Wear Comfortable Clothing: Loose, comfortable clothing makes it easier for your acupuncturist to access various points on your body.
  • Hydrate: Drink water before your session to stay hydrated.
  • Avoid Caffeine: Minimize caffeine intake to help you relax during the session.
  • Arrive Early: Arriving a few minutes early allows you to relax and settle in before your treatment begins.

Why is Acupuncture Performed?

Acupuncture is used to treat a number of conditions, including:

  • Joint and muscle pain: Helps with arthritis, neck pain, and back pain (sciatica)
  • Migraine Headaches: Sinus headaches, stress headaches and cluster headaches
  • Sports Injuries: Foot pain (plantar fasciitis), Knee pain, wrist pain, or shoulder pain
  • IBS and Acid Reflux: aids in managing nausea, and other digestive disorders.
  • Stress & Anxiety: promote relaxation, and reduces stress and anxiety.
  • Sleep Problems: Improves sleep quality, reduces insomnia.
  • Fertility: supports fertility efforts, helps lessen menstrual irregularities, and menopause symptoms.

What Can You Expect During Acupuncture?

During your acupuncture session with Jeffrey Nudelman, M.S., L.Ac., you can expect a calming and focused experience tailored to your needs:

  • Initial Consultation: Your session will begin with a brief discussion about your health concerns and goals. Jeffrey will ask questions to understand your symptoms and determine the best acupuncture points for treatment.
  • Needle Insertion: Once you’re comfortably positioned, Jeffrey will insert fine, sterile needles into specific points on your body. The insertion is typically painless, though you might feel a slight tingling or pressure.
  • Relaxation Period: After the needles are placed, you’ll relax for 15-30 minutes. Many people find this time deeply calming, and some even fall asleep.
  • Needle Removal: Jeffrey will gently remove the needles, and you might feel a sense of relaxation or rejuvenation afterward.

Overall, the session is designed to be soothing, helping you achieve balance and wellness.

What is Post-Treatment Care For Acupuncture?

After your acupuncture session, it’s important to rest and avoid strenuous activities for the remainder of the day. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water to support detoxification, and try to limit alcohol and caffeine intake to maintain the treatment’s effects. Pay attention to how your body feels and note any changes, discussing them with your acupuncturist during your next visit. Continuing with healthy habits like a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management will further enhance the long-term benefits of your acupuncture treatment.

What Are the Risks of Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is generally safe when performed by a qualified practitioner, with mild side effects like slight bruising, soreness, or bleeding at needle sites. Rarely, dizziness or fainting may occur. Those with bleeding disorders or on blood-thinning medications should consult their healthcare provider before treatment. Overall, the risks are low, especially when balanced against the potential benefits.
