The 411 on prescription weight-loss drugs

People who have been overweight for a long time are turning to prescription drugs to help them control their hunger and lose weight. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that about two-thirds of American adults are either overweight or obese. And the number of fat people has slowly grown over the past few decades. Now, 40% of Americans are considered obese because their body mass index (BMI) is 30 or more.

Medication for weight loss is meant to help people who are overweight or fat, especially if they have health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol that are linked to their weight. But it’s also important that they’ve tried to lose weight by making changes to their lives, like getting more exercise and eating healthier foods.
