Types of PCR-COVID Tests

Rapid RT-PCR COVID-19 Test (Same day results)

This Rapid COVID test uses the Mesa Biotech Accula testing platform. The SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR Test is a real-time fluorescent reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction test for the qualitative detection of nucleic acid from the SARS-CoV-2 in upper respiratory specimens.

Results are for the identification of SARS-CoV-2RNA. The SARS-CoV-2 RNA is generally detectable in respiratory samples during the acute phase of infection.

The COVID Molecular PCR Test detects the genetic material of the virus using a lab technique called polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This test can also be called a PCR test. A health care worker will collect fluid from a nasal swab. You will be able to see results in three to five days if sent to an outside lab. The FDA approved certain COVID-19 at-home test kits, available only with doctor approval. The sample is then mailed to a lab for testing. We highly recommend consumers against buying unapproved home tests. This may be inaccurate and unsafe.

Who should get the RT-PCR COVID Test?

Coronavirus testing is still a highly important tool in the public health effort to keep infections low. Getting tested on a regular basis is a good idea for everybody, especially those who come into regular contact with others through work or other obligations. You should get tested if you begin to experience COVID-19 symptoms and especially if you have traveled recently or have plans of doing so soon.

List of Coronavirus Symptoms

According to the CDC, symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

This list does not include all possible symptoms. CDC claims it will continue to update this list as we learn more about COVID-19. The CDC also advises on seeking medical attention when emergency warning signs occur for COVID-19. If someone is showing any of these signs, seek emergency medical care immediately:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
  • New confusion
  • Inability to wake or stay awake
  • Bluish lips or face

COVID Testing for Events and Travel

As the new vaccines from Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson become more readily available, many of us are going to be resuming things like air travel and in-person attendance of work and other events. Even as vaccines are distributed, it’s important to continue taking precautions like wearing a mask, social distancing when possible, and getting regular tests to minimize the risk of spreading COVID-19.

If you are going to be attending an event where you may come into contact with others, make sure you’re aware of relevant information like the venue, safety standards being observed by the event coordinators, and current infection rates in your area. Get tested for the coronavirus before the event, and make sure you give yourself time to get accurate results before attending. The CDC also continues to recommend getting a COVID test 3-5 days after returning from travel, and continuing to self-isolate for the following week even if the test is negative.
