Why Am I Not Losing Weight on My GLP-1 Medication?

If you’re not losing weight while taking a GLP-1 drug, it could be because your metabolism is slow, which is how rapidly your body burns calories. A lot of people label it a “plateau,” but this may happen with any weight loss method, not just medicine.

These drugs are part of a group of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. At first, they were made to aid people with type 2 diabetes, but now many doctors also give them to those who are overweight and have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above. Some are approved for weight loss, while others are given for other reasons but are nonetheless effective for weight loss.

Experts also say that medicine alone isn’t enough. Paunel Vukasinov, MD, an internist and obesity medicine physician, says, “These treatments are powerful tools for weight management, but they work best when combined with healthy eating, regular activity, and long-term lifestyle changes.”

While hitting a stall on the path to your target weight can be frustrating, it’s normal. Knowing why plateaus happen with GLP-1 drugs and how to get past them will help you stay motivated and on track. Read the article
