The risk of cancer is higher for people with metabolic syndrome

New research that was released online before the print issue of Cancer was printed on April 1, 2024, revealed that the chance of acquiring cancer seems to grow as metabolic syndrome worsens.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute states that there is an increased risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, and stroke associated with a cluster of symptoms known as metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is the presence of three or more of these symptoms:

  • Abdominal obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • High blood sugar
  • High blood triglycerides
  • Low HDL (often referred to as “good” cholesterol)

Dr. Jared Braunstein, a board certified internist with Medical Offices of Manhattan, comments on the study and why metabolic syndrome might increase cancer risk. Read the article.
