Over 60? This daily drink may weaken bones, say doctors.

When you were a kid, you probably heard that drinking milk is great for your bones. It’s true that cow’s milk has calcium and vitamin D, which are super important for keeping your bones healthy. Unless you’re lactose intolerant or sensitive to it, you don’t have to stop drinking milk after childhood. Research suggests that drinking milk is beneficial for your bones, even as you get older.

Bone loss happens when your body breaks down bone faster than it can make new bone, and it tends to speed up in women during their 40s and in men during their 50s. When folks reach their 60s, bone density becomes a big deal—half of women are diagnosed with osteoporosis by 65, and a quarter of men do too. You might already know that drinking soda can make you more likely to get obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. But it’s not good for your bones either.

Many big studies have found that drinking soda regularly, especially colas, is connected to poorer bone mineral density and an increased risk of fractures, particularly in women.
