Can Stress Cause IBS?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder. Often those with IBS experience abdominal pain related to bowel movements, diarrhea, and/or constipation.

So, what causes IBS? In truth, the exact cause is unknown. It often occurs after a severe case of diarrhea. IBS is also attributed to patients with a particular surplus of bacteria. The variety of causes makes it difficult to pinpoint one specifically as the primary cause.

The onset of IBS, though, is thought to be triggered by infections or emotional stress. In fact, exposure to high stress events in early childhood have shown to be associated with greater occurrence of IBS.

No matter what the cause, our GI team is here to help. We are here to listen, diagnose, and create a treatment plan to help mitigate your symptoms.
