Holiday Travel Health Tips for Planes, Trains, and Cars

With the holidays just around the corner, there will be lots of driving, riding, and flying around to visit family and friends. While the Christmas spirit may take hold, the fact that you are apt to get sick as a result of traveling dampens the celebrations. Traveling calls for added precautions against becoming sick while on the road. I have included the best health tips for traveling so that you can enjoy your vacation to the fullest.

1. Prepare Your Immune System

Before you ever leave town, take just a few steps to boost your immunity. Get a flu shot, stay hydrated, and sleep well prior to your trip. Take daily vitamins or vitamin C supplements to help give your immune system a little boost it needs.

2. Stay Hydrated

Flying in particular can be dehydrating. Inadequate hydration lowers your immune system and makes one susceptible to illness. Bring along a refillable water bottle with you and drink frequently. While travel is often stressful, it is not good to have too much caffeine and alcohol during the flight since it dehydrates the body further.

3. Pack Hand Sanitizer and Wipes

Every time you get in a car, onto a train, or up in the air, you will be touching one surface after another. Always carry a little bottle of hand sanitizer with you that contains at least sixty percent alcohol along with disinfectant wipes. Clean the tray tables, armrests, seat belts, and other places that are touched frequently. Always remember to wash your hands with soap and water whenever the opportunity presents itself.

4. Wear a Mask in Crowded Areas

In crowded areas such as airports, train stations, or bus terminals, a mask will lower the chances of catching some airborne infections. Masks may be required or even mandated to be worn in certain places. In cold and flu seasons, bringing a good mask, such as class N95 or KN95, with you is really worth it if you travel.

5. Take Movement Breaks

Long rides in cars, airplanes, and trains have you sitting in one position for an extended period of time, increasing the risk for blood clots, especially if you are older. Improve your circulation and reduce how much pain you experience by getting up, stretching, and walking around every hour or so.

By following these easy suggestions, you will lessen your risks for sickness and might actually enjoy your holiday travel time.
