Other recommendations for preventing back pain include making the effort to stand up straight and avoid heavy lifting when you can. If you do lift something heavy, bend your legs and keep your back straight.

It is time to see a doctor if you are experiencing severe pain that does not improve with rest, or if you have relatively consistent numbness or tingling, trouble urinating, fever, weight loss (when not on a diet) and general weakness. Of course if you are continuing to experience pain after a fall or an injury you should see a doctor right away.
