Dealing with Common Ulcerative Colitis Medication Side Effects

Medications for ulcerative colitis (UC) can treat and prevent flares, but they can also cause unpleasant side effects. For example, immunomodulators such as azathioprine (Azasan) reduce UC inflammation by inhibiting the immune system, but this effect is associated with an increased risk of infection.

Other UC drugs, such as aminosalicylates (5-ASAs), steroids, and biologics, may cause undesired side effects of varying severity. Some side effects may be transitory and disappear with time. However, if the bothersome side effects persist, you should notify your doctor. They may change your prescription regimen or provide alternative strategies to control the negative effects.

Dr. Adam Pont practices gastroenterology out of New York City’s Medical Offices of Manhattan. “Nausea, vomiting, and upset stomach are potential side effects of pretty much all UC medications,” he explains. Read the article.
