Are You a Mosquito Magnet? Here’s Why and What to Do About It

Some people seem to attract mosquitoes more than others, and factors like body heat, sweat, skin bacteria, and even alcohol consumption may play a role. While you can’t change your body’s natural chemistry, using effective insect repellents, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding scratching bites can help reduce discomfort and lower your risk of complications.

According to Dr. Yoshua Quinones, “If you do get bitten, don’t scratch. Scratching can break the skin barrier, increasing the risk of infection and making the bite even more inflamed and itchy.” Instead, Dr. Quinones recommends using ice to soothe itching and seeking medical attention if you develop symptoms such as a rash, swollen lymph nodes, trouble breathing, confusion, or worsening bites.
