{"id":5376,"date":"2020-05-07T14:36:13","date_gmt":"2020-05-07T18:36:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.medicalofficesofmanhattan.com\/kawasaki-disease-a-disease-that-may-impact-kids-with-covid-19\/"},"modified":"2023-05-22T06:37:36","modified_gmt":"2023-05-22T10:37:36","slug":"kawasaki-disease-a-disease-that-may-impact-kids-with-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.medicalofficesofmanhattan.com\/es\/news\/kawasaki-disease-a-disease-that-may-impact-kids-with-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Kawasaki Disease, A Disease That May Impact Kids With COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Medical Offices of Manhattan\u2019s Internist,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalofficesofmanhattan.com\/team\/robert-segal-md\/\">Dr. Robert Segal<\/a> speaks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/en-us\/2020\/05\/9780767\/kawasaki-disease-kids-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Refinery 29<\/a> about Kawasaki Disease, a disease that may impact kids with COVID-19<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s quoted saying:<\/p>\n<h2>What is Kawasaki disease?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a rare disorder that you\u2019ll find in about 20 out of every 100,000 or so pediatric cases,\u201d Dr. Segal says. \u201cIt causes inflammation of the blood vessels, something we call vasculitis&#8230; It\u2019ll impact multiple organs: the skin, the eyes, the heart, the kidneys, the lymph nodes. It mainly affects young children, and it usually starts out with a persistent fever of 101 to 104 [degrees] and a funky red rash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is no known cause. \u201cIt could be genetic, it could be from a virus or another bacteria,\u201d Dr. Segal says. \u201cIt\u2019s one of those insidious diseases. There seems to be some predisposition, and it can be passed through generations, but there\u2019s no inheritance pattern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers don\u2019t believe it can be transmitted from one person to another, so it won\u2019t necessarily spread like wildfire \u2014 or like COVID-19.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the signs and symptoms of Kawasaki disease?<\/h2>\n<p>Aside from the fever and the rash, Dr. Segal says initial symptoms may include red eyes, due to blood vessel inflammation in the whites of the eyeballs. Other warning signs: red lips, changes in lymph nodes, and a \u201cstrawberry-colored tongue that looks swollen and bumpy,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no cure. It usually resolves in a month or two,\u201d Dr. Segal says, adding, &#8220;There are cardiac manifestations we see in adults when they&#8217;ve had it as kids.&#8221; The blood vessel inflammation weakens some arteries, he explains. Later, the arteries could bulge, leading to an aneurysm.<\/p>\n<h2>How can you treat Kawasaki disease?<\/h2>\n<p>Although Kawasaki can\u2019t be officially \u201ccured,\u201d it\u2019s generally treatable with aspirin or similar fever-reducing drugs. Sometimes, intravenous immunoglobulin is needed to bring down inflammation, Dr. Segal says.<\/p>\n<h2>How is Kawasaki disease related to COVID-19?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the million-dollar question,\u201d Dr. Segal says. How exactly it could be related to coronavirus is still unclear. Both Kawasaki and the coronavirus cause inflammation of multiple systems within the body, Dr. Segal notes.<\/p>\n<p>Although scientists initially believed that children were less at risk of severe complications from COVID-19, Dr. Segal says he\u2019d encourage kids to stick to the same safety measures as adults, such as social distancing and hand washing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mortality rate might be lower in children, but I wouldn\u2019t say it spares them,\u201d Dr. Segal says. \u201cIt might be milder in children, but there have been cases of kids dying of COVID\u2026 They call it the novel coronavirus for a reason \u2014 it\u2019s novel.
