{"id":5287,"date":"2018-10-25T16:21:18","date_gmt":"2018-10-25T20:21:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.medicalofficesofmanhattan.com\/fda-approves-a-new-flu-drug\/"},"modified":"2023-05-22T06:37:34","modified_gmt":"2023-05-22T10:37:34","slug":"fda-approves-a-new-flu-drug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.medicalofficesofmanhattan.com\/es\/blog\/fda-approves-a-new-flu-drug\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA Approves a New Flu Drug"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 class=\"article-content--title\" style=\"text-align: center;\">FDA Approves a New Flu Drug<\/h1>\n<p><em>One of our Cardiologists from our sister practice Manhattan Cardiology and co-founder of LabFinder, <a href=\"https:\/\/manhattancardiology.com\/our-team\/robert-segal-md-facc-rpvi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rober Segal, MD<\/a>, was quoted in a Vogue article about a new Flu drug.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-130035\" src=\"https:\/\/www.medicalofficesofmanhattan.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/flu-shot-midtown-manhattan-300x206.png\" alt=\"flu shot midtown manhattan\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" \/>After last year\u2019s unprecedented flu season, which caused nearly 80,000 flu-related deaths in the U.S., this year is beginning with a bit of good news: There\u2019s a new FDA-approved drug for treating the virus, the first in nearly two decades.<\/p>\n<p>The new drug, which will be sold under the name Xofluza, works differently than the current go-to prescriptions, including Tamiflu. Xofluza requires only one dose\u2014compared with Tamiflu\u2019s two pills a day for five days\u2014for people ages 12 and up to help reduce symptoms and shorten the illness, as long as it\u2019s taken in the first two days of sickness. \u201cI\u2019m excited to see how effective it is,\u201d says Dr. Robert Segal, a cardiologist, and co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.labfinder.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Labfinder.com<\/a>, an online platform that offers patients help with scheduling laboratory and radiology tests as well as unlimited access to their results. In addition to it being a single dose treatment, Xofluza is also \u201cbased on a novel mechanism against the flu, hopefully [allowing for] little to no drug resistance.\u201d The new technique, which blocks the enzyme needed by the virus to replicate itself, has been shown to work against the many drug-resistant strains that have sprung up in recent years, such as the common A and B strains. \u201cIf it\u2019s effective, it will be a game changer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This drug isn\u2019t a cure-all, though, and the best offense against the flu is, of course, a good defense. \u201cNone of these medications can replace how effective getting a flu shot is,\u201d says Segal. \u201cIt\u2019s so important to get vaccinated every year. This is not just to protect yourself, but to also protect those around you.\u201d (The best time to get the shot is early fall, as flu season peaks between December and February.) Beyond the shot, avoid people who are already infected. \u201cAs simple as it sounds, the flu virus is highly contagious, so the probability of you being infected increases if you\u2019re with someone who\u2019s already sick.\u201d Other obvious-but-effective measures include washing your hands regularly, eating well, and staying hydrated with clear fluids. \u201cDrinking a lot of water helps your immune system.
