It can start quickly if you fall or lift something too heavy, or it can get worse slowly.

Anyone can have back pain. But some things that increase your risk include: getting older (starting in your 30’s or 40’s), poor physical fitness and being overweight. Back pain can even be hereditary for some specific conditions or diseases.

The demands of job that requires many physical tasks, or stress related to your work can also cause back pain. Another reason to quit smoking is that it can cause your back ailments along with smoker’s cough.

Back pain can be prevented by exercising often to keep your muscles strong. Also, by maintaining a healthy weight you are doing wonders to put less stress on your back. Make sure to get enough calcium and Vitamin D every day for strong bones. Other recommendations for preventing back pain include making the effort to stand up straight and avoid heavy lifting when you can. If you do lift something heavy, bend your legs and keep your back straight.

It is time to see a doctor if you are experiencing severe pain that does not improve with rest, or if you have relatively consistent numbness or tingling, trouble urinating, fever, weight loss (when not on a diet) and general weakness. Of course if you are continuing to experience pain after a fall or an injury you should see a doctor right away.

Our caring staff can provide guidance towards back pain solutions that will work for you. Click here to make an appointment today.

Back pain can range from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp pain that makes it hard to move.
